‘YOUNG PEOPLE –

THE CREATIVE NATION’

THE MASK PRIZE

The MASK Prize celebrates its 5th year!

The MASK Prize is the renowned competition that catalyzes and celebrate creativity and innovation of young Africans.

The Star, the leading Kenyan newspaper, is the MASK Prize Media Partner in Africa.

Informer East Africa is the MASK Prize Partner in the UK

Participants enter their works free online in any art media in five categories: ‘Visual Art under 13 y/o’, ‘Visual Art under 25 y/o’, ‘Schools’, ‘Music/Videos/Performance’, and ‘Entrepreneurial Ideas’. This is not a ‘usual’ art competition: winners are selected for how creative, innovative and inventive they are.

Prize-winners are selected by a board of Judges. Prizes, 300,000 Ksh in total, are awarded at the official Prize-Giving ceremony in Nairobi. Prizes are supported by Rivers Foundation (UK), The Nobelity Project (USA), and Mabati Rolling Mills (Kenya)

More than 4,500 young people have participated in the competition since 2013. The participants say that the competition ‘motivates them to be even more creative’, and makes them ‘better for it’.

The MASK Prize exhibitions have been seen by more than 350,000 people worldwide at the Nairobi National Museum (Kenya), Nairobi University (Kenya), Michael Joseph Art Center (Kenya), The Saatchi Gallery (UK), Turner Contemporary (UK), University for the Creative Arts (UK), Royal Overseas League (UK), and The Library of Congress (USA).

The MASK Prize is a non-for-profit programme pioneered by a UK education charity MASK School for Creativity and Innovation (initially known as Mobile Art School in Kenya) that strengthens young people’s creativity and innovation for successful employment and leadership.

Turner Contemporary, UK. To celebrate the MASK Prize’s 5th year, the MASK Prize is pairing up with the Portfolio, an art competition of Turner Contemporary, art gallery in the UK. Sharing the theme – ‘Making a Change’ – winning entries from the both competitions will be displayed together at Turner Contemporary in Margate 27 May-27 September 2017, and at the Michael Joseph Art Center in Nairobi on 27 April 2017.

“This is an important opportunity for young people of the two continents to come together and express their ideas on the changes they would like to make in the world. In the 21st century our future will depend on young people’s ability to generate new solutions for more peaceful and prosperous life”, Alla Tkachuk, the Founder of MASK and the MASK Prize.
